How to structure a prayer
Prayer is direct communication to God. You can pray to express gratitude, confess sins, seek answers to questions, gain wisdom, protection, guidance, comfort, and healing. Praying can be done in many different ways. You can pray aloud, in a quiet whisper, or silently within your heart. The most important key to prayer is to be sincere and genuine in your communication with God. Remember to believe that God will hear and answer your prayers. It says in Mark 11:24 that, “Whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” So Speak with clear intention and purpose in every prayer, avoiding unnecessary or empty words because God already knows what you need and what you are going to ask for. Additionally, prayers that are intended to harm others or to fulfill selfish desires are detestable to God and can even be considered a form of witchcraft, which goes against true fellowship with Jesus.
Address God first
In every day conversations and communications we address who we are talking to. We do the same in prayer. It puts the focus of our prayer on God. We can address God in these ways: “Our Father in heaven”, “Heavenly Father”, “Father God”.
Thank and praise God for all he has done.
God loves to see that we have grateful hearts. Giving thanks to God for answered prayers, blessings, overcome situations, healings, ect. Also give thanks for the hard times and suffering. In those difficult and dark times God is still there using those times as lessons, learning opportunities, and a chance to come closer and find refuge in Him.
Ask for forgiveness
A repented heart opens paths to God and prepares you to pray humbly. It clears out sins you have committed knowing or unknowingly, and allows for God to hear you clearly with a clean heart.
Ask for what you need.
The bible says in Matthew 7:7-8 “7 Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” So never hesitate to ask God for anything you need. You can ask anything from the small to impossibly large requests. Nothing is too insignificant, small, difficult, or big for God.
End the prayer in Jesus’ name.
It’s important to end every prayer in the name of Jesus. Saying, “in Jesus name” seals the prayer and acknowledges that God’s authority over your prayer while also showing your reliance and belief that God will answer your prayer. Also sometimes a prayer that is not completed by name of Jesus can allow a listening spirit not of God or demon to catch that prayer and manipulate it to work against you.
